Catholic Health Services announces the retirement of Dian Backoff, Executive Director of Catholic Hospice, after a distinguished 40-year career in healthcare management. Backoff’s tenure at Catholic Hospice, beginning in 2018, under her leadership, the organization experienced significant growth, more than doubling its daily patient census over six years and expanding its compassionate end-of-life care services throughout South Florida.

Prior to joining Catholic Hospice, Backoff played a pivotal role in transforming VITAS Healthcare from a small operation into the nation’s leading hospice provider. Her expertise in strategic direction and operational efficiency significantly contributed to the growth and success of the organizations she served.

During her tenure, Backoff was instrumental in enhancing the quality and reach of hospice services. She oversaw the implementation of innovative care models and fostered a culture of empathy and excellence among the staff. Her leadership not only improved patient outcomes but also strengthened the organization’s presence within the community.

“I found people here to be very committed to what they were doing. That was very refreshing, and they were also very quick to accept the mission of quality that we have to (continually) increase our quality to grow,” Backoff said. “I think I’m leaving them in a place that’s really positive. They’re positioned for further success and further growth. We have things in place that will keep the organization running. Obviously, they’re going to have to continue to think about optimization as the world of technology grows.”

Reflecting on her career, Backoff emphasized the profound impact of compassionate care, recalling her experiences with patients facing terminal illnesses. Her commitment to holistic and patient-centered approaches has left an indelible mark on Catholic Hospice and the broader healthcare community.

Catholic Health Services extends its deepest gratitude to Dian Backoff for her unwavering dedication and significant contributions to healthcare and hospice services. Her leadership has left an indelible mark on the community, and her commitment to compassionate care will continue to inspire future healthcare professionals.
